About event
Cossoul inaugurates, in its Visual Arts program, Balão, the exhibition "Carbono 14 – Sem Tempo" by Matilde Franco and Mayank Sahni. In a dialogue between what Mayank Sahni and Matilde Franco try to tame, light and sound, these artists give shape to time through sculptures in ceramic and glass, materials that go through fire to become, possibly, eternal.
In Mayank's sculptures, the crystallization of light occurs when it passes through the glass. Likewise, in Matilde's performances and soundscapes, sound is only heard if it finds a way to reverberate. Here, light and sound are explored as elements that occupy and transform space, in a search for the physicality of sound, as well as in an attempt to capture, retain and amplify light in this space and time.
“ If there is no light or sound, what else will there be?”
We also have a conversation around the exhibition (7pm) between Matilde Franco, Mayank Sahni and Luzia Alves, curator, about the trajectory of the artists, future projects, the works on display and the creative and constructive process in glass, ceramics and sound, followed by a guided tour of the exhibition.
About the artists:
Matilde Franco
2005, Lisbon | Visual Artist
Studied Artistic Production, specializing in Ceramics, at Escola Artística António Arroio. Currently attending the 2nd year of the Degree in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. In his artistic practice he explores the field of sculpture and installation, through the audiovisual spectrum and ceramic materials.
Earth and water are two elements very present in his work, being the object of study in his projects. Through them, he seeks to rescue his ancestral heritage in a confrontation between the body and matter - using the plastic medium as the main vehicle for questioning. More recently, he has developed research in the field of the Portuguese soundscape, with a main focus on the natural phenomena and elements that compose it, seeking the connection it establishes with human beings, and how they influence each other.
< br/>Mayank Sahni
1994, New Delhi, India
He holds a BA in Interior Design and Architecture from Nottigham Trent University (2016). After 4 years of experience in the industry in the Design area, in 2021 Mayank came to Portugal to connect his experience in Design with Art. Currently located in Lisbon, he is attending the Masters in Art and Science of Glass and Ceramics at NOVA FCT, in association with the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. In 2024, he opened Studio Sahni where, together with his girlfriend, they explore the artistic medium together.
In his artistic practice he seeks the volumetric, the tangible and the tactile, he uses his life experiences as a theme and tries to give them a visual and plastic form, through glass and ceramics. This introspective work highlights the connections between his inner and outer world. The result is the creation of a variety of “pieces from interior sites”. She is interested in physical work, the interaction between her body and other media, such as clay, glass and wood. He values the mark of fire on his pieces and “I accept it as a certainty that I can’t control everything.” As fire is the best friend and worst enemy of the two materials you work with, clay and glass, sculpture offers you all the possibilities of structure and plasticity you need. “I consider it a giant universe, full of metaphors to explore.”
