About event
🇫🇷The French neo-baroque returns a pompous visual to the Hollywood blockbuster like a sovereignly thrown boomerang. However, it adds to it not only French charm, but also darkened tones of melancholy. It mixes the pop culture aesthetics of video clips with high art, visually attractive tourist locations with the opposite face of the French capital, romantic and criminal genre elements, as well as tragic tones with ironic humor. The heroes and heroines of the neo-baroque experience great feelings in the images of glossy aesthetics, but they long for an escape from a world that does not understand them.
🎬The lecture will be followed by a screening of the film Bad Blood (Leos Carax, 1986).
Leos Carax, the "prodigy" of French cinematography, as well as the continuation of the tradition of Jean-Luc Godard, grew out of neo-baroque advertising aesthetics and he connected it with cinematic naturalism. In Bad Blood, a crime plot involving a deadly virus intertwines with a ballad about crazy love in a love triangle. Poetic images are mixed with harsh energy to evoke emotions and bodily sensations in the audience. A cult work of the "cinema du look" of the 80s and at the same time a manifesto of Carax's unconventional cinematic poetics, it is a work about youth in crisis, about illness and about love that defies death.
