About event

Today we define luminescence as the light radiation of condensed substances caused by their excitation from the ground state by supplying energy in various ways (the term also includes the well-known terms fluorescence or phosphorescence). There are quite a few materials capable of luminescence in nature (we call them luminophores, incorrectly phosphors). The path to the discovery and understanding of luminescence to the ability to design and manufacture the desired luminophores was a long one - it begins with alchemists and personalities such as A.E. Becquerel, Philipp Lenard and Bernhard Gudden (working at the University of Prague during the Second World War) played a significant role in it. Luminescence has become an inconspicuous assistant in the discoveries of atomic and nuclear physics - so it is worth a little attention.
