About event
Oscar Wilde's famous comedy presented by the MA Theater becomes the story of a lonely, refined person with a brilliant sense of humor who was punished by society for the need to be himself. A man who paid with his life for our right to openly declare our sexual orientation. Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest at a time when Europe was in the midst of a major shift in understanding of sexuality. Emerging sexology began to describe the naturalness and innateness of homosexual orientation, while the legal apparatus simultaneously harshly criminalized any displays of intimacy between men. In this paradoxical environment, space was born for coded speech, ambiguity and the language of hidden references, which Wilde masterfully used in his work to reflect the desire for freedom, individuality and the right to one's own identity - and thus fundamentally ahead of his century.
