About event

Divadlo 3+kk, the Center for Experimental Theater and the Belarusian Embassy of Independent Culture are organizing a discussion with Belarusian artists about the state of independent culture in Lukashenko's Belarus. The event is part of Amnesty International's Letter Writing Marathon campaign, in which millions of people around the world write letters against injustice to help specific people. In the Czech Republic, letter writing takes place between 15/11/2024 and 15/12/2024.

Since the last presidential election in Belarus, an unprecedented wave of civil resistance against the illegitimately elected president Alexander Lukashenko, mass arrests and police violence, 4 years. There are still nearly 1,300 political prisoners in Belarusian prisons, and a number of civically engaged Belarusians, including artists, workers in non-profit organizations, academics and activists, were forced to emigrate... What does Belarusian independent culture look like today? How do the cultural institutions still surviving in Belarus function and how has the work of artists living in exile - most often in Poland - changed?

They discuss:

Rufina Bazlova - visual artist

Henadz Smaliak - editor of the Belarusian human rights web magazine Not Today media

Krysćina Šyjanok - director of the Office of the Democratic Forces of Belarus in the Czech Republic

Natallia Michalina Skarynka moderates.

Held at Studio CED. The discussion will take place in English with the possibility of simultaneous translation into Czech. Free admission.
