About event
Host: Jakub Záhora (KBV and PCP Faculty of Arts)
The lecture will focus on the Visualizing Palestine project, which produces infographics dealing with Israel, Palestine, political violence in the region and its international dimensions. The starting point of the lecture is the criticism of data visualizations, which, although situated in social and political conditions, are mostly seen due to their dependence on statistical data as a "objective" depiction of reality. As I will show, Visualizing Palestine uses numbers, data and facts as inherently convincing arguments, but at the same time mobilizes a number of visual mechanisms and strategies that bring the political practices in Israel and Palestine personal and emotional levels. As a result, Visualizing Palestine subversively uses the "number of numbers" to disrupt the hegemonic understanding of the situation in the Middle East.
