In 2021, students from Ukraine represented the third largest group of foreign students in the EU. Overall, from 2013 to 2014 the number of Ukrainian students abroad increased significantly, and the most significant growth occurred after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since the beginning of the period under review, Ukrainian students have preferred Slavic EU countries. In our work we analyze their selection of the university, respectively. Faculty in three EU countries, which have the highest share of Ukrainian students and at the same time a high level of language proximity (Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia). We observe the preference of the election of universities near the Ukrainian border or in the capital. Limited knowledge of the language of study may be an explanation of the observed tendency to choose technical fields of study and avoid highly selection programs.
