Hunter Underwater is a Berlin-based cello quartet founded by Hui-Chun Lin. The ensemble comprises four cellists from diverse cultural backgrounds: Guilherme Rodrigues (Portugal), Zeynep Ayşe Hatipoglu (Turkey), Gábor Hartyáni (Hungary), and Hui-Chun Lin (Taiwan). Their music blends improvisation with compositional ideas, creating soundscapes that range from deep, warm tones to high frequencies. They utilize extended techniques, incorporating noise and tonal elements, often employing prepared objects on their cellos to craft complex forms and structures.
.
The quartet's compositions frequently explore themes such as the environment, landscapes, nature, and history, reflecting on contemporary events or natural phenomena. Each member brings extensive chamber music experience, performing with immediacy that adds tension and intensity to their pieces. They function as both composers and improvisers, contributing to a dynamic and evolving musical dialogue.
.
Hunter Underwater's recent album, "Archipelago," showcases their collaborative compositions refined through extensive experimentation. Recorded at Berlin's Zentrifuge, the album features layered harmonics and dynamic interplay, highlighting their commitment to innovative cello performance.
.
Jazz im Kiez is a jazz concert series representing talented musicians in two marvellous bars in Kreuzkölln / Reuterkiez on Wednesdays: Fuk;s Bar and Oblomov.
