The production of The Window is an evening from the program line Artist in Residence as part of the presentation - Guest of the resident artist.
The production of The Window is a dance thriller that offers a perfect combination of dance and music. It gives you a glimpse into a dark red hall evoking hell, where a cellist and a group of dancers are preparing for a concert. The whole plot follows an abstract logic to the tunes of Bach's cello suites and gives room for imagination and associations. One thought leads to another, and none of them are bad.
You can observe situations full of tension, restlessness and unspoken emotions. While some passages may be frightening, others may be amusing. As time goes on, the story gets more and more complicated and gradated. There are more and more different symbols, the meaning of which is not clear. Emotions escalate and encourage you to immerse yourself in your own feelings.
Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren fully demonstrates his art of creating with irony and subtle fantasy in the production, which he combines with the harshness of the frosty north. This time, however, he did without one main theme or plot – dance, music and emotions are central. There are many stories hidden in the production, but it's up to you how many of them you uncover.
Jo Strømgren is one of the leading European choreographers, whose works are performed by ensembles all over the world. He created the production OKNO, which will be performed in Norway from February 2025 under the name The Cello, especially for the chamber spaces of Ostrava's Theater "12". The intimacy of the small stage, where you are literally within reach of the dancers and you can observe every detail, is then an integral part of the experience that OKNO offers.
Jo Strømgren is the artistic director of the dance company Jo Strømgren Kompani and permanent choreographer of the Norwegian National Ballet operas. In his biography, we can find more than 200 productions, most of them full-length, presented in 70 countries. It belongs to the "export items" of contemporary Norwegian art. This talented Norwegian writes plays and film scripts and directs drama - he is, by the way, a specialist in staging Ibsen. However, the strength of Strømgren's choreographic handwriting is strongly linked to the identity of the north and lies in the ability to tell stories. To tell stories magically, entertainingly, but also movingly and ironically, with imagination and pointed wit. In this, Strømgren as a choreographer of contemporary dance is completely different. Humor and grotesque vision of the world is not very common in this genre. However, his dance theater cannot be imagined without irony, exaggeration or parody.
