Johana Merty's exhibition SELF WHATEVER is another project of the dramaturgical series HOME AGAIN at the Art Gallery. The series of exhibitions presents the work of personalities in the past and present associated with the GRAU kllktv association, which has been behind the activities of the Art Gallery since its foundation in 2011.
Johana Merta is an intermedial artist and a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts (FaVU) , where she studied in the studios of performance, intermediation and drawing and graphics. Although she is no longer active in Brno, she is one of the founding figures of the GRAU kllktv association, significantly connected to his earlier activities.
Her work is typical of working with diverse art forms, which she combines into installations. At the turn of 2023/24, she could not create for half a year. Personal experience with internal frustrations and anxieties, re-evaluating the relationship of oneself to oneself, or the need for necessary defiance towards the "state of affairs", gradually became the impetus for new creations. She began to cut monochrome collages from offset aluminum sheets, which form the core of her latest works. The name SELF WHATEVER ironically refers to the need to challenge traditional stereotypes of personal identity or socially acceptable models of "self-perception". He concludes that these fads, despite their toxicity, are entrenched and normalized within our society. Through the examination of personal limits, Johana Merta tries to open a space for sharing more general questions related to self-acceptance and to reflect on the consequences of patriarchy, which affect not only the human entity, but also the landscape.
