About event

After more than three centuries, the music that originated in Spiš in the early Baroque period is returning to concert halls - at a time when the ideas of the Reformation, humanism and European musical culture met in local cities.

The concert will present the spiritual works of Ján Šimrák st. (Johann Schimracka), an organist and respected member of the city council in Spišský Podhradí, and Zachariaš Zarevúcke, an important representative of musical life in Levoča. Their compositions will be heard in the unique context of the work of the Venetian master Giovanni Gabrieli, one of the most important personalities of European music at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The program will offer music full of contrasts - from intimate spiritual meditations to monumental multi-choral compositions of the Venetian tradition. The listeners will be able to discover the fascinating connections between the musical events in Spiš and the most important European centers of their time.

Performers:
Le nuove musiche – orchestra and choir
Jörn Hinnerk Andresen – conductor
Jakub Mitrík – artistic director

The program will include works by:
Johann Schimrack (Ján Šimrák st.)
Siehe, wie fein und lieblich ist's
Nach dir Herr, verlanget mich
Singet dem Herren ein neues Lied
Ach Herr, wie sind meiner Feinde so viel
Zacharias Zarevutius (Zachariaš Zarevúcky)
O Jesu mi dulcissime
Meine Seele erhebt den Herren
Der Tag der ist so freudenreich
Giovanni Gabrieli
collection of Symphoniae sacrae (1615)

Music, which was hidden in historical sources for centuries, is heard again today by specialists in historically informed interpretation.

The concert will take place in the premises of the Košice State Philharmonic - House of Arts and is part of a long-term project to restore the musical heritage of Spiš in the 17th century.
