About event

John Medeski will perform on December 8, 2025 in Villa Tugendhat. He is a very popular improviser, a creative composer and a leading spirit of many unique projects. Medeski became one of the most influential characters on the border of modern jazz, funk and avant -garde music. His name is inherently associated with the legendary Trio Medeski Martin & Wood, with which he defined a unique sound and attracted a new generation of listeners to instrumental music. At the same time, he does not hesitate to embark on a completely unknown territory at which he likes to associate, whether on purely improvisation or carefully prepared bases of various musician worlds. He won musical education at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied classical music and at the same time plunged into jazz. At the end of the 80s he moved to New York and became part of the dynamic progressive jazz scene where he began experimenting with various sounds and genres. At this time, he met double bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin, with whom he soon joined into a revolutionary project.

in 1991 founded the Trio Medeski Martin & Wood, a group that disrupted traditional jazz formats. Although they initially ranked among the Acid Jazz genre, their music soon evolved into something completely original. The band built a strong reputation thanks to their live concerts, which were always full of energy and surprising musical passages. It is said that no two of their concerts have ever been the same, and this legend of uniqueness has made them a cult legend. In addition to the Medeski Martin & Wood trio, John Medeski, sixty -year -old, has a rich solo career and a long list of collaborations that show his versatility. Together with the basic trio he worked repeatedly in the studio and on stage with phenomenal guitarist John Scofield. Medeski with a saxophonist, a composer, and above all a good spirit of New York avant -garde John Zorn, worked on a long range of albums and concerts. He recorded, among other things, with Iggy Pop, Sean Lennon, Marce Ribot, Irma Thomas, Blind Boys of Alabama and many others. So far, the latest side of John Medeski was the band Madskillet, which included, among other things, a player on Suzapaf. We saw the band in 2017 at the Blues Alive festival, debuted a year after.

John Medeski is also devoted to solo piano projects, the first album with such a program published in 2013 under the name and Different Time . At solo concerts, John Medeski reveals his classic roots and improvisation championships, but limits his experimentation tendencies, on the contrary, letting his sense of melody, melancholy and last but not least - because he often chooses a unique chamber environment for his solo concerts. Therefore, Medeski's concert in Villa Tugendhat can also be one of the biggest events of the season.
