John Robb im Posh Teckel
Funded by the Foundation of Knowledge and Presented by Oxfanzine & livegigs.de.
A comprehensive overview of the goth music and subculture. Appears in the spring of 2025 at the VERTIL Verlag.
John Robbs latest work offers a comprehensive overview of the goth music and subculture and its persistent importance.
Robb describes the social, political and pop cultural contexts in this basic work, from which in Great Britain from the late 1980s and then in the middle of the 1980s after and in parallel to punk and post-punk, a new, independent youth culture developed. It initially remained nameless and was then referred to as a goth. Robb, as a contemporary companion of this subculture, describes the peculiarities of this "Art of Darkness", which, on the one hand - consciously or unconsciously - returned to cultural influences, on the other hand, on the other hand to Glam, Psychedelic, Rock'n'Roll, punk and post -punk and thus established its own tradition. Goth: The demise of Rome and the Goths, Lord Byron and the romantic poets, European folk tales, vampires, Gothic architecture and painting, the occult and spans the arch to today's Instagram and Tikok phenomena. Individual chapters in detail the relevant bands such as The Sisters of Mercy, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, The Cult, Joy Divsision, The Cramps, New Model Army, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Damned, Inrenal New Buildings, Laibach, The Cure, Theast of Hate, Virgin Prunes, Fields of the Nephilim, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and many others.
In its origins, Goth was a primarily British phenomenon with a worldwide radiance, but Robb also goes into detail how Goth made in other countries in Europe (Germany, France, Yugoslavia ...) and what triumphal march goth gothed in time and in which footsteps did the bands there kicked.
"goth - the dark side of the punk" is an enormously detailed basic work for everyone who wants to know more about a phenomenon that is still omnipresent today.
