About event
Julius Rodriguez (Verve/US) *live*
// Opening DJ set by Sean Steinfeger
12 €/ 18 €/ 22 € plus fees * Box office tba.*
Minimum age: 16
The New York-born, Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, bandleader and producer Julius Rodriguez breaks all boundaries and presents a unique sound that only belongs to him. On his current album “Evergreen” he juggles elements from jazz, gospel, hip-hop, classical and electronica. Keyboard sounds, vocoders and digital drums meet rich melody and harmony parts, the whole thing sounds ultra-modern, is as catchy as it is complex and is immediately catchy. While on the predecessor “Let Sound Tell All” he largely limited himself to his main instruments of piano and drums, here he plays bass, guitar and clarinet in addition to various keyboards and percussion.
When asked about genres, he has a clear and beautiful answer: "I hope you listen to this and forget the whole thing about genre names," he says. "This is simply music that you can dance to, feel and think to. Evergreen goes through a whole range of genres, but this is the world I see and hear. This is the feeling I evoke. I have a statement and said: "The genre is just me". In short: Julius Rodriguez embodies the true spirit of jazz by leading it into the future in a completely free manner.
Anyone who already demonstrates such mature musicality at the age of 25 must have the distinction Let prodigy fall. Rodriguez is a multi-talent: mastering the piano and harmony helps him to play the drums, which in turn better grasps the rhythmic dimension of the piano, he says. His career in brief: at the Manhattan School of Music at the age of twelve, his first performances at the age of fourteen, then to the legendary Julliard. At the Betty Carter Workshop he was taught by Jason Moran, among others. He has since worked with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove and Meshell Ndegeocello and was a member of the Onyx Collective.
