About event

The pseudo-documentary production captures the slightly unlikely meeting of two great playwrights. They are united by three things - the desire to find the truth in history, the love of writing and a taste for sandwiches.

In 1938, it was no longer socially acceptable to shoot someone for a sandwich with mayonnaise, so Čapek and Karvaš solve the problem with elegance their own. Nothing is impossible, there are no limits and interpretations are inexhaustible.

Karel Čapek (*1890 – †1938)
Czech playwright, writer and translator. For a large part of his life, he worked as a journalist in Lidové noviny. He really liked Fridays, because on Fridays the so-called "Fridayers," which was a circle of democratic intellectuals around T. G. Masaryk. In his works, he reflected the philosophy of relativism and his pacifist attitude to war. His most famous work is the book Dášeňka, or the life of a puppy.

Peter Karvaš (*1920 – †1999)
Grandson of Dominik Skutecký and a native of Banská Bystrica. During his life, he created an extensive prose and dramatic work. He started his studies in Prague at the Czech Technical University, but finished it in Bratislava in a completely different field. He worked as a dramaturg of Czechoslovak Radio, SND and Nova scéna. In the years 1968-1990, he was forbidden to publish, so he taught at VŠMU. He liked to walk around the classroom while teaching.
