About event
🟡 Věra Chytilová's film has been newly digitally restored by the National Film Archive and right now #zpetvkinech.
🇬🇧 EN: The film Calamity (1980) by Věra Chytilová has been newly digitally restored by the National Film Archive and is now back in cinemas. #BackOnScreens. The film will be screened on January 26th at the Ponrepo cinema with English subtitles. (EN annotation bellow)
The story follows the graduate Honzu (Boleslav Polívka), who starts working at the railway. The enthusiastic young man does not know the customs of the ossified environment, which causes controversial situations and highlights the dysfunctionality of the entire system. It becomes clear right away during his first train ride in the role of a train driver, when the tracks are covered by an avalanche...
Higher forces also intervened in the filming itself. This took place under the supervision of censorship in five stages. The scathing parable about the moral apathy of Czechoslovak society was shown in cinemas after several ordered adjustments, but without any advertising campaign. Audience interest was still so great that screenings in Prague were banned.
After a forced seven-year break, Věra Chytilová was able to return to Barrandov at the end of the seventies. She filmed two bitterly funny tragicomedies practically at the same time, Panelstory or Jak se rodí sídlíšte (1979) and Calamita (1980). />

🇬🇧 EN: The story follows Honza (Boleslav Polívka), a recent graduate who begins working for the railway. The enthusiastic young man is unfamiliar with the rigid customs of the ossified environment, leading to controversial situations that highlight the dysfunction of the entire system. This becomes evident during his first train ride as a driver, when the tracks are buried by an avalanche.
After a forced seven-year hiatus, Věra Chytilová returned to filmmaking at Barrandov Studios in the late 1970s. Almost simultaneously, she created two sharply satirical tragicomedies: Panelstory (1979) and Calamity (1980).
