Abstract: More sophisticated language and abstraction are often needed to describe more complex problems in theoretical mathematics and physics. This role is fulfilled by the study of the so-called "higher structures". We will see many examples of mathematical structures that are based on geometric shapes and graphic composition. We work with structures using (in layman's terms) "Calculus of shapes and structures", professionally it is the theory of operatic categories (M. Batanin, M. Markl, 2014). Let's prepare for a certain amount of abstraction and plenty of pictures on the board. If there is time left, I will try to balance the informality of the lecture with the result that made opera theory famous/founded, namely the principle of loop space recognition (J. Stasheff 1963).
