About event

Kampa Island and the adjacent Malá Strana have their special charm shaped by the proximity of the river and centuries of human habitation. The participants of the walk will discover stories from winding streets and shady corners, the remains of medieval buildings interspersed with modern houses and palace complexes.

The walk starts in front of the church of St. John the Baptist Na Prádle, once the center of the Újezd settlement and one of the oldest churches in today's Prague. It was rebuilt many times, so the narrow Romanesque windows have been preserved next to the remains of the original Gothic painting, high rafters and gables next to the addition of the Baroque porch. The tour will continue to the Johannite Commandery, or headquarters of the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta. It has been operating in the forecourt of the Charles Bridge continuously since the 12th century.

The island of Kampa in the second part of the walk attracts with a large park, the proximity of the river, and a view of the Charles Bridge. A piece of history will be easily revealed in the local names: Sovovy or Odkolkovy młyny, Velkopřevorský mlyn, Michnovská or Nosticova zahrada, visitors will learn other interesting facts from the guide.

To spice up the walk a bit, participants will sit on Václav Havel's bench and talk to the guide about where the persecuted playwright Václav Havel had breakfast with the French president, what Jan Werich said about his to friend and almost neighbor Jiří Trnk, why Kampa has yellow penguins marching along the Vltava river, where you can see the face of the young sculptor Ferdinand Maxmilián Brokoff, or how it was with the eggs during the construction of the Charles Bridge.
