About event
Evening tour of the church of St. Charlemagne. It was built as part of the plan of the founder of the New Town, Charles IV. on the elevation of Prague. The pious emperor inserted Christian symbolism into the highest level – the five churches are arranged in such a way that connecting them with a straight line creates an imaginary cross.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Charlemagne was designed to resemble the famous coronation Palatine Chapel in Aachen – it is an unconventional building on an octagonal plan for its time. A guided tour of the interior takes participants to otherwise inaccessible places. They will see the holy stairs modeled on the Lateran Basilica in Rome, the Bethlehem Chapel, on the porch we will see the organ, the bell tower and we will also look under the roof, where you can see the wooden beams from the Baroque treatment and an unusual view into the presbytery - through a window in the ceiling.
