Between light and shadow. An opera mystery in the heart of Berlin.
The Poznań Opera invites you to the Berlin Philharmonic for the fourth time. After the great success of the concert performances of Moniuszko's operas, one of the most important works of the Polish repertoire of the 20th century is now on the program: "King Roger" by Karol Szymanowski.
"King Roger" arose from Szymanowski's fascination with antiquity, the Orient and Nietzsche's philosophy - inspirations that the composer collected during trips to Sicily and North Africa. The libretto, written together with Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, was written in the turbulent times after the First World War and is a spiritual journey into the depths of the human soul. The contrasting composition combines oriental melodies, Christian liturgy and modern musical language.
More than an opera - a mystical parable about the search for the divine in humans, embedded in the color and scent-saturated atmosphere of the hot Sicilian summer. A musical impression of antiquity and the Orient, a hypnotic image of the search for a truth that liberates. Let's set out together on a path through Sicilian gardens - open to emotions that hover between tangible reality and hidden longing.
The title role is played by Szymon Mechliński, an outstanding baritone of the young generation, celebrated on renowned stages in Europe and America. The musical direction will be taken by Jacek Kaspszyk, one of the most important Polish conductors on the threshold of the 20th and 21st centuries, and the evening will be moderated by Frederik Hanssen.
We invite you to one of the most important events promoting Polish culture in 2025. “King Roger” is an opera about freedom, inner transformation and the search for harmony - a work that Szymanowski himself considered his greatest achievement.

Pełna contrastów kompozycja łączy orientalne melody, chrześcijańską liturgie and nowoczesny język muzyczny. Zanurzona w krajobrazie kuszącej colorami and zapachem gorącego powietrza Sycylii. Muzyczna impresja na temat antyku i orientu, hipnotyzujący obraz poszukiwania prawdy, która wyzwala. Przejdźmy wspólnie sycylijskie ogrody and otwórzmy na emocje balansujące na styku tego, czego doświadczamy and najskrytszych pragnień.
