Gender and disciplinary specifics of the Matouš effect in science: a special cocktail of money, stereotypes and uncertainty

Kateřina Cidlinská (FHS UK, AMBIS)

"For to everyone who has, more will be given and added; from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away." (Matthew 25:29). Even in science, which is otherwise based on the idea of objectivity and measurement by the same meritocratic yardstick, as Robert K. Merton showed when he formulated the so-called Matouš effect and the principle of accumulated advantage. Since then, the functioning of this phenomenon has been empirically documented many times in science. However, what has received less attention so far is the interweaving of the field and gender specifics of this phenomenon. The paper will therefore focus on how the accumulated advantage is prescribed in the perception of one's own academic path among women and men from different disciplines. The presented research findings are formulated based on the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data mapping the academic careers and working conditions of the Czech scientific population. Come and compare your own experiences and impressions of the Czech academic environment with our data and their interpretations.

The lecture presents the results of the project Gender inequalities in academic careers: the organizational context as a driver of cumulative dis/advantage (GA ČR 24-11677S)
