About event

Kenny Barron - piano (USA)
Kiyoshi Kitagawa - bass (JP)
Johnathan Blake - drums (USA)

"Kenny Barron played with the creators of modern jazz, with Dizzy Gillespie in the sixties. He phrases his swinging mainstream piano as if it had all the bop clichés and bop phrases that hardly seem to exist today a young pianist is no longer a given. His harmoniously very flexible playing stands for passion and dedication beyond competition and rivalry.” - Joachim Ernst-Behrendt
With these beautiful words, Ernst-Behrendt described Kenny Barron in his “Jazz Book”. It can hardly be expressed more accurately. In his more than 60-year career, Barron's unmistakable style has brought him into the ranks of the absolute world stars of jazz. Born in Philadelphia in 1943, Barron played with Philly Joe Jones at the age of 16 and, after moving to New York, played with almost every musician of note. Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, Ron Carter, Stan Getz; They all enjoyed Barron's incredibly sensitive and creative playing, whether as an inspiring soloist or as an ideal accompanist in all kinds of jazz contexts. Kenny Barron has won Downbeat and Jazztimes critics and reader polls multiple times, is a six-time “Best Pianist” by the Jazz Journalists Association, and was inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2010, he was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship, the highest official honor for jazz musicians in the USA.
Kiyoshi Kitagawa has not only made a name for himself as a congenial player in Kenny Barron's trio. The double bass player, who was born in Japan but has now lived in Brooklyn for a long time, has played with many greats of the jazz scene over the course of his career. After first learning the guitar, he switched to the double bass at the age of 19 and worked with many well-known Japanese musicians in the 1980s before moving to the United States. There he worked with, among others, Brian Blade, Kenny Garrett, Jimmy Heath, Danny Grissett and Regina Carter. Jonathan Blake is an American jazz drummer and composer. He has worked with many jazz greats, including Tom Harrell, Kenny Barron, David Sánchez, Don Byron, Oliver Lake, Randy Brecker, and many others. Blake is also known for his work as a member of the Omer Avital Quintet and the Ravi Coltrane Quartet. In his own projects, Blake has brought together a number of high-profile musicians such as Chris Potter, Mark Turner, Avishai Cohen and Ben Street. His playing is characterized by energy and creativity, and he is highly regarded by critics and audiences alike.
