About event
Lecture by Ondřej Dušek.
The method of foundation on caissons, more precisely on so-called pneumatic caissons, is slowly disappearing from awareness even among the professional public. Nevertheless, this procedure dominated bridge construction from the last quarter of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century. A large part of Prague's bridges, from the Palacký Bridge to the Branický Bridge, have at least some pillars based on caissons. In addition to efficiency, the method was also characterized by extreme working conditions - diggers worked in a closed space under the river bed under artificially maintained overpressure (hence the epithet pneumatic). It was the health risks associated with this method that gave it the name caisson disease, i.e. decompression sickness. The lecture will try to describe the form of this technology at the end of the 19th century and some of its applications on Prague bridges.
Entrance through the bookstore, admission is voluntary.
