About event
It is often claimed that there is no absolute truth, but only many different points of view, none better than the other. This motto seems to be widely used in today's political discourse. “Truth” is at best still the name of relevant propaganda media (“Pravda”, “Truth Social”).
The debate should try to get to the bottom of the question using philosophical means and philosophical knowledge.
The Philosopher Marian David is a well-known proponent of the correspondence theory of truth, the theory that states that an opinion is true if it agrees with reality. Professor David finds himself in the minority when he asks the question “Is there an absolute truth?” answered with “yes”.
The philosopher Max Kölbel, known for his work on truth relativism, can agree with the critics of absolute truth.
Which of the two will join which camp could not be determined at the time of going to press, as there was no agreement on how the question being debated should be interpreted. So let us surprise you!
KiC Debates is organized by the project Knowledge in Crisis, which is supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) as part of the Cluster of Excellence Program (10.55776/COE3) is funded. We are a cooperation between the University of Graz, the University of Salzburg and the University of Vienna under the leadership of the Central European University.
