About event
As almost everyone knows, smartphone use among children and young people takes disturbing proportions. It is bad for their physical, cognitive and social development. Some children receive a phone or tablet just after their birth. Most students sit at a screen for hours every day and hardly get anything else.
Since January 1, 2024, smartphones are no longer permitted during school hours. That seems like a good measure, but it also has a 'waterbed effect'; The smartphone use among children and young people is partly moving to the hours before and after school. Many teachers are busy during the first hour of each day to appease the 'fitties' among students of the previous hours. Their cognitive and physical development still suffers heavily from those addictive devices. The great power of social media and related parties has a lot to do with that.
How to proceed?
We are talking about it with MEP Kim van Sparrentak. Few people are so active for this issue as she is.
***
Kim van Sparrentak is MEP on behalf of GroenLinks-Pvda. Kim focuses on the human factor within all digitization and digital sovereignty. She was a negotiator for the Greens (EU, Brussels) about the AI Act, for the Platformwerk Directive, and wrote an initiative report on the addictive design of, among others, smartphones.
