About event
On the occasion of celebrating 30 years of intercity cooperation between Prague and Kyoto, Kyoto star Šigejama Motohiko and Divadlo kyógen, which has been operating in the Czech Republic since 2000, will perform together. The audience can look forward to three classic plays, including the comedy Tied to a Pole in a bilingual version. It was possible to see it during the Czech National Day in the Czech pavilion at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, where President Petr Pavel watched it together with Her Majesty Princess Takamado. Pleased with the success at the Expo, I polished this version to perfection in Prague. You will also see the games Voice behind the door in Czech and God of Nió in Czech with Japanese fragments. The refined humor of the kyogen genre will be able to be fully enjoyed even by those who come across it for the very first time. Then we will all realize together that regardless of distance, culture or nationality, we as people laugh in the same language.

The creation of the Kyogen Theater troupe and its collaboration with the Kyoto Shigeyama family revealed a previously unknown depth of mutual understanding and inspiration. This feat can be compared, without exaggeration, to the time when the Japanese began to discover European classical music. Today, after more than one hundred and fifty years, we can observe the mastery that Japanese performers have achieved. Japanese traditional theater is still waiting to discover and develop its potential outside of Japan. Whether it will be able to achieve a similar success to classical music, we do not know yet. If this happens, it is already clear that this process started thanks to the cooperation of the cities of Prague and Kyoto.
