About event
Monastery of smaller Franciscan brothers at St. Jakub has never been open to the public. During almost 800 years of existence, countless important historical events, which can be found here, have occurred here. The coronation feast of John of Luxembourg and Eliška Přemyslovna took place in the refectory of the monastery in 1311. That this monastery was selected for this extraordinary opportunity is evidenced by its importance and narrative at that time. After many fires, the complex has always undergone reconstruction, but we can still admire
- the original Gothic cloister with ribbed vaults surrounding the Tomato Court.
- We will also see the Hall of John of Luxembourg, where the feast was held,
- the coronation hall,
- Gothic Arcade corridor,
- Herbal Monastery Garden
- and the oldest part of the building- cellar.
The theme of the murals in the halls is the scenes from the life of St. Francis.
- We will start the tour in the church of st. Jakub, whose monumental Baroque decoration hides many art treasures. The temple was one of the largest shrines in Prague and was one of those in which the body of Charles IV was exposed after death- in the church we will see works of extraordinary artistic and spiritual values: late Gothic woodcarving of St. Jacak, Kenotaf Vratislav of Mitrovice- Work proposed by J. B. Fischer of Erlach and made F. M. Brokoff, altar paintings by Petr Brandl, a monument to the Old Town butcher's Guild, who played an irreplaceable role in the history of the monastery and.
