The reconstruction of the building complex that formed the western front of Marshal Józef Piłsudski Square until 1939, i.e. h. the Saxon Palace, the Brühl Palace and three tenement houses on Królewska Street, is managed by the company Pałac Saski sp., founded for this purpose. z o.o. carried out. According to the Law of August 11, 2021 on the preparation and implementation of investments in the field of reconstruction of the Saxon Palace, the Brühl Palace and the tenement houses on Królewska Street in Warsaw, the external architectural design of the restored buildings should correspond to the condition of August 31, 1939. However, the interiors of the buildings should meet the needs of future users and meet social expectations of the planned functions.
The project to rebuild the western facade of Piłsudski Square can confidently be called the largest construction project in Poland in historical architectural form since the post-war reconstruction of the capital and the Royal Castle in Warsaw.

What is the significance of the reconstruction of the Saxon and Brühl Palaces and the tenement houses on the Królewska Street for the history and urban planning of the Polish capital? What is the history of these buildings? What assumptions were made when preparing the reconstruction? What challenges does the implementation of the project entail?

Our Warsaw guests Maria Wardzyńska and Tomasz Markiewicz will address these and other questions at the last Klaus Zernack Colloquium 2025. The event will be moderated by Bernd Karwen (Polish Institute Berlin, Leipzig branch) and our director Prof. Dr. Igor Kąkolewski.
