We would like to invite you to the next lecture within the SNM Astronomers' Club, which will take place in the Discovery Room (3rd floor) of the SNM Natural History Museum on the Vajanské nábreží in Bratislava.

We are glad that the invitation was accepted by Mgr. Patrik Čechvala, PhD. from the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v. v. i. in Prague.
The topic of the lecture will be dedicated to this year's General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, which took place in faraway Cape Town.

Title: What does it look like when 2000 astronomers meet? - IAU General Assembly Cape Town 2024

Abstract: In August of this year, the XXXII was held in distant Cape Town. General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union. This is a unique meeting of astronomers from all over the world, which takes place every 3 years. This year, more than 2,000 astronomers from 107 countries met in the Republic of South Africa. The space was dedicated not only to the exchange of the latest astronomical knowledge, but also to discussions about the further direction of international astronomical research, the adoption of resolutions having an international impact or the election of new members of the individual structures of the union. For example, during XXVI. At the General Assembly in Prague, it was agreed that Pluto lost its status as a planet and was reclassified as a dwarf planet. During the lecture, we will explain the importance of the International Astronomical Union for the international community, take a closer look at some of the interesting projects it covers (some of which are also connected to Slovakia) and take a look at Cape Town together.
