About event
👀 What to do when you don't get into university and the offer from the employment office literally takes your breath away? You go with a friend to a radio audition, after which his program manager informs you that you will "never really become a presenter".
When you nod incomprehensibly after being asked if you can read, he will force you to read a storybook in a box covered with egg cartons. So that, after a few days of peculiar training, he thinks that you can read the morning news live. And you start doing in the media without ever even thinking about it. No dream come true, just a coincidence and a virtue out of necessity.
✍🏻 That was the beginning of Petr Bárdy's journalistic story in short, which instead of a classic prologue will open an imaginary door to his latest book. The fifth author's title with the characteristic title East of common sense.
📚 The jubilee, twentieth book published under the Aktuality.sk banner is different than you might expect. And not only with content, but also with graphic processing, paper and printing.
And Peter Bárdy is personal this time. Through 22 essays - stories, he will take you to the land of Dubček's rolls and bryndza, the Tisova villa with the archives of the communist secret service or pre-election, Hungarian and other stews.
💬 You will listen to a stranger's conversation, although you were taught at home that this is not allowed. Watch how Jano Slota discovered the Internet or swim across the Danube instead of having breakfast with Captain Danko. You will be there when Robert Fico returned Sword and Slot to the game, Igor Matovič did not defeat the mafia state and the four-time prime minister started a spiral of revenge.
📕 Peter Bárdy in the book East of Common Sense is not just the Peter Bárdy you know. Author of political bestsellers about Zuzana Čaputová, Robert Fic and Igor Matovič. He is the editor-in-chief of Aktuality.sk and a political commentator.
He is a boy from a working-class family who, although he became a journalist by accident, has been a journalist for almost three decades. He is a secret fan of a roll with bryndza, who doesn't take photos with rolls or in the fields, crunching ears of corn in his fingers, but spends long hours tapping away at the keyboard.
And he is also the writer of the year, who was sued by the longest-serving Slovak prime minister for the cover of his book and is demanding a hundred thousand euros (he also wants the same amount from the publisher). And he did not back down and wrote the fifth book, which had been ripening in him all these years, to give his own account of Slovakia, Slovaks and Slovaks. About themselves, about us. Honest, without censorship.
To the east of common sense is a collection of essays - stories from which Peter Bárdy composes a picture of Slovakia. Both sad and funny. Serious and funny. Kind and (self)ironic. Personal and quite depersonalized.
👨🏽💻 The editor-in-chief of Aktuality.sk is not building a myth about the nation whose DNA he carries deep within himself, nor about his country, which he does not want to leave, although he considered it for a while. He layers upon himself incidents about bridges from which World War II munitions are dropped in childhood and which in adulthood turn into pseudo-bridges between East and West that divide.
But he does not stay on either bank: he is neither against nor for, he is not with "our" or "your" people.
He tries to build a bridge on which all can walk, and through authentic and in a certain way universal stories that transcend the boundaries of personal experience to find speech. Not a common one, simply just speech. After all, who hasn't at least drooled from the bridge or passed a red light in thought?
✨ Ticket price: €5 in advance, €8 on the spot.
