About event

The National Institute of Monuments invites you to the next lecture in the series Book Thursdays, which this time will be devoted to the publication by Jan Kypta and Jiří Marounk entitled FIELD TRACES OF CASTLE SIEGES IN THE HUSSITE CENTURY. ⚔️

The book evaluates the results of long-term archaeological research into the conquest of castles in the Czech Republic. In the center of interest are terrain relics that are related to the activities of the besiegers in the late Middle Ages. The main research method is a surface survey of the wooded surroundings of besieged castles. The publication is divided into two parts. The results of the surface surveys are presented in a catalog of 19 locations in which the terrain traces of the besiegers can be unequivocally identified. Field formations can be functionally divided into three groups. One is represented by the besiegers' camps, the second by firing positions, and the third includes small forts that blocked the access roads to the castle. The troop camps can best be examined on three examples from the time of the Hussite Wars: Bechyně (1428), New Castle in Prague 4 (1420/1421), Sion (1437).
The introductory part of the book is explanatory. In it, field relics are compared to each other and interpreted with the help of written and iconographic sources.
