About event
Come to the Rotterdam Library on November 11 for KOKKI BITJA: an asset to the Atlas Van Stolk. Browse through the beautifully designed cookbook and listen to the story of Marjolein Kokosky Deforchaux- Kelderman and Marjolein Kooijmans about Indian heritage in the Atlas Van Stolk and the cookbook KOKKI BITJA.
The guest is Marjolein Kokosky Deforchaux- Kelderman, author of KOKKI BITJA, a book about the oldest Indian cookbook from 1843. Marjolein researched the history of this cookbook and translated the 215 recipes from Pasar Malay into Dutch. Indian cuisine is an important part of Indian culture in the Netherlands: for older generations it offers a direct link to their country of origin, for younger generations it is an important part of their cultural identity. In a new book she tells the story of Kokki Bitja and, in addition to a translation, she has provided the recipes with a cultural-historical background. The Atlas Van Stolk collection contains historical prints, topographical prints and sheet music from the then Dutch East Indies. KOKKI BITJA tells about Indian heritage from a new perspective, namely from women, from the kitchen. That is why KOKKI BITJA is a real asset to the Atlas Van Stolk.
