About event

[Scroll down for English] We invite you to a collective reading with an intersection circle facilitated by Elias Bárczay Mahovská with the title "More than books: The social capital of libraries"

📍Tent in the Great Hall of the Trade Fair Palace
Language accessibility: The text in English will be in Czech

What are libraries in our world? And why do people still go there, often not only for books? The library was never just a place to borrow books. It is a meeting place, a refuge from loneliness, a place of learning, rest and informal care. It is one of the so-called third places, or spaces between home and work, which allow the emergence of relationships, trust and a sense of belonging. What forms of support, care and civic life take place in libraries? And what would happen if these spaces disappeared? The goal of shared reading is to look at the library not only as an institution, but as a public asset. A place that helps hold together a divided society.

We read selected passages from the books:
✦ Beyond Books: How Public Libraries are a Crucial Form of Social Infrastructure, Rachel Carolyn Bindman (2024)
✦ Social Infrastructuring in Public Libraries: Librarians’ Continuous Care in Everyday Library Practice, Eckerdal et al. (2024)

What are libraries in our world? And why do people still visit them, often for more than just books? A library has never been just a place to borrow books. It is a space for gathering, a refuge from loneliness, a place for learning, relaxation, and informal care. It belongs to the category of so-called "third places"—spaces between home and work that foster relationships, trust, and a sense of belonging. What forms of support, care, and civic life take place in libraries? And what would happen if these spaces were to disappear? The goal of this group reading is to view the library not only as an institution but as a public good—a place that helps hold a divided society together.
