About event
🟥 Commented walk through the Central Cemetery
▪️ Brno Central Cemetery / Zentralfriedhof was founded in the 1880s, when it replaced the older Municipal Cemetery, which was located at today's Kounicová street. Alois Prastorfer, a graduate of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, became the architect of the Central Cemetery. Prastorfer's project reflected the economic status of one of the most important industrial cities of the Austrian monarchy, so high-quality architecture and tombstones of important Brno families were to be concentrated here. Unfortunately, both world wars affected the development and shape of the cemetery in a radical way. The effort to deal with German traces in the city did not escape even the Central Cemetery, where the gravestones of German families were removed. Even so, the tombstones of important personalities such as Ernst Johann Herring, Adolf Löw, Karel Wawra, Adolf Ripka von Rechthofen and others have been preserved here. The guided walk takes you through the oldest part of the cemetery and introduces you to both its development and the stories of personalities who once co-created the city of Brno. The event is held as part of the Dialogue Center's monthly theme "Near Deaths".
