Curator Jan Skřivánek will guide you through the exhibition Václav Špála – Flowers.
The exhibition at Museu Kampa presents Václav Špála as an extremely focused and systematic painter, for whom the floral still life became a lifelong theme and a space for deep painting exploration. It is the bouquets that make up the most numerous part of his work and at the same time one of his least stereotypical positions - despite the repeated motifs, Špála was constantly looking for new color, compositional and expressive possibilities in them. The exhibition shows flowers not only as bearers of sensual beauty, but also as a place where the painter's experience, strict composition and spontaneous painting gesture meet. Special attention is paid to the way in which Špála composed his still lifes in front of images of his own landscapes, thereby creating a multi-layered dialogue of images within an image. The guided tour will bring you closer to Špál's working process, his relationship to the repetition and transformation of the same motif, as well as contemporary critical reactions. The exhibition thus offers the opportunity to view Špál's bouquets not only as iconic works of Czech modernism, but also as a surprisingly up-to-date statement of painting.
