Composer, arranger and pianist Marek Brezovský (1974 – 1994) left behind an extensive body of work in the field of rock and classical music. In every song, you can feel that he believed in what he created - and it was this sincerity that gave him the power to touch people. At the request of the Brezovský family, the Medzi zemou a ... project brings chamber works and songs written by his sister Mirka Brezovská and Jakub Tlolka to the Convergence festival. "I approach this project with great respect and reverence and I am honored that Marek's family approached us. I am also glad that once, as a conservatory student, I had the opportunity to premiere his composition Freedom. Now we will add six more premieres to it with a line-up of great artists," says Jozef Lupták, director of the festival and also one of the performers, about the new project. On March 8, 2026, a concert by Marek Brezovský will be performed in the Great Concert Studio of the Slovak Radio, performed by excellent musicians, pianist Vladislav Šarišský, violinists Daniel Rumler and Michaela Hruba, and cellist Jozef Lupták, who will be joined by Robert Roth. The dramaturgy was prepared by the composer's father, Ali Brezovský. It is a largely unknown work that was created in 1994, when he worked on the scenic music for Viliam Klimáček's play Pressburger blut for GuNaGu theater. At that time, Marek Brezovský was a first-year student at VŠMU. "The compositions are unique in their story, urgency, atmosphere and the feelings that Marek put into them. He immersed himself in himself, in his work, and his musical fantasy and invention worked at full speed until the end. Thanks to the cooperation with Vladislav Šarišský and Matúš Uhliarik, who transcribed and edited these ideas according to the audio recordings, it was possible to breathe life into the compositions years later. They are another part of the musical mosaic, which it highlights the extraordinary, rich and diverse creative world of Marek Brezovský," said the composer's father, Ali Brezovský, about his works. Robert Roth will perform as narrator and singer at the concert. When the energy of his unmistakable voice meets the emotional depth and distinctive poetics of Marek Brezovský's music, an exceptional experience can be expected.

"Many people already carry many of Marek's music in their hearts, but now open your hearts even more and make a place for yourself in them, because a lot of unheard music is rolling in, and it is for you, for us - and somehow Marek lives in us."
Vladislav ŠARIŠSKÝ

Marek Brezovský was a Slovak music composer, arranger and pianist. In every song, you can feel that he believed in what he created - and it was this sincerity that gave him the power to touch people. His short life was dynamic, filled with creative efforts and personal struggles. His compositional poetics is expressed in the title of one of his compositions, Llano estacado. The desert, which appears in Karl May's novel of the same name, was for him a metaphor for an endless space with a melodic horizon, poetic and frightening. His works arose from the need to perceive things in depth, to go beyond one's own shadow and to explore worlds without clear rules. "I think that, first of all, the barrier of conventions that were, are, and will definitely be removed should be removed," he said in one of the interviews about contemporary music.

Marek Brezovský left behind an extensive work in the field of rock and classical music. His work was released on music carriers only after his death. The album Hrana, which was created thanks to the musician's classmate and friend Oskar Rózs, was released in 1998 and since then in several reissues, it was also performed in concert. Marek Brezovský's music is one of the most interesting that was created in Slovakia in the 1990s. In 2000, he received the DOSKA in memoriam award for the scenic music for the performance of Chekhov's Chaika at the Andrej Bagar Theater in Nitra. Interest in his work is also confirmed by extremely successful concerts and the documentary film by Patrik Lančarič Hrana: Four films about Marek Brezovský (2014), which won the main prize at the Cinematic festival in Piešťany. In 2016, the musician in memoriam received the Sun in the Network award for the best film score for the film Hrana. In the same year, a documentary project mapping his life and work was concluded with the release of three DVDs Hrana-Trilogy. In 2019, the artist was awarded with an entry in the Golden Book of SOZA. The life and music of Marek Brezovsky became a story pure, sincere, intimate, curious, deep, transcendental, non-pathetic, one hundred percent, heading "toward a point of impossible balance, where everything, it seems, must be heading towards undisturbed beauty, but just then there is a slow development of destruction to its peak." (M. Brezovský)

"The first half of the 1990s was very difficult for musicians and artists in general. The whole society found itself in a whirlwind of fundamental changes. New impulses, problems were coming, the atmosphere was changing, there were few opportunities to play and realize oneself artistically. And Marek was going through a very difficult period in his personal life. At the same time, he was gradually maturing as an author, he started studying composition at VŠMU, and his work was gaining in complexity. On May 15th, 1994, the play Pressburger blut, for which he composed music and recorded it with his band at the time, began to weigh on him more and more, and he felt that he was running out of strength things. It was during this extremely short period of time - from May 15 until his departure at the end of June - that the majority of the compositions that we included in the chamber concert were created. They are unique in their story, the atmosphere, and the feelings that Marek put into them Uhliarik, who transcribed and edited these ideas for the cast of today's concert, was able to breathe life into the compositions years later. They are another part of the musical mosaic that highlights the extraordinary, rich and diverse creative world of Marek Brezovský." I didn't rush because I knew who would speak to me. "Please, I would like to transcribe some of Marek's songs from the tape." Of course I agreed. Half a year passed and the rewriting became the creation of the concept of a large dramaturgical plan. Together with Marek's mother Vlasta and his father Ali, we sensed a fleeting opportunity, grabbed it and got to work. The publication of a collection of compositions by the Young Pianist and an upcoming concert were created. What is important is that Marek's work has been captured and remains with us on the journey through time. Many people already carry a lot of Marek's music in their hearts, but now open your hearts even more and make a place for yourself in them, because a lot of unheard music is rolling in, and it is for you, for us - and somehow Marek lives in us."
