We are embarking on a visual world tour together through various body art forms and traditions.

There are countless ways to be human - and equally diverse ideas about what beauty and mean faith. Characteristics of traditional identity may be perceived by some as foreign or even disturbing, but they always carry deep cultural and spiritual meaning.

Body art is, first and foremost, a means of communication. Together we embark on a visual journey through different forms and traditions that can inspire us, but also challenge and surprise us. Photographs and videos provide insights into hidden chapters of human history.

Anyone involved in a ritual not only embodies a role - he or she becomes that role. Sometimes sacrifices are made: one's own body is put at the service of the community, pain is endured and transformed into sacred experiences.

In my lecture I talk about the meaning of body art in the context of tradition, gender roles, initiation, identity, sacred pain, fertility, protection from the "evil eye", status and belonging - and much more.

Transmutation - the spiritual like physical transformation - is a central element of every initiation rite.

Mag.art. Bella Volen is an academic visual artist, gallery owner, art lecturer & entrepreneur. In addition to her work as a painter, she has been using body art as a contemporary form of expression since 2005. Through over two decades of intensive research, numerous travels and international research, she has discovered diverse cultural histories and teaches not only visual art, but also the history of body art.
