Counting Galway in Ireland and follows the toxic relationship between Maureen Folan, a lonely forties, and her manipulative mother Mag Folan. The game examines the topics of isolation, control, unfulfilled desires and cyclic nature of abuse. The village of Leenane itself symbolizes isolation. Power and manipulation are reflected in how Mag controls Maureen through lies, emotional blackmail and pretended physical weakness, preventing her from finding happiness. Unfulfilled dreams and regret are reflected in the game in Maureenin's longing expectation of love with pato, which will destroy the fate and mother's interference. The game is soaked in violence and brutal acts that point to the tragic cycle of abuse and revenge. The motive of the family also plays a central role - the toxic relationship between mother and daughter shows how family bonds can also be a source of consolation and destruction.
