CULTURE AGAINST THAT FORGETTING
CULTURE AGAINST FORGETTING is an interdisciplinary, international cultural initiative that has been implemented in Berlin since 2025 as a regular series of events by Andreas Lechner. The focus is on the question of how remembrance culture can be shaped in the 21st century – beyond ritualized forms. The answer is: as a lively, multi-voiced, sensually experienced and politically relevant examination of history and the present. Remembrance is understood as a public process - artistic, social and open to exchange.
This claim was already noticeable in January 2025. To mark the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism, exhibitions, film screenings and readings took place in Berlin. The reading from Peter Weiss’ Aesthetics of Resistance in the Sophienkirche was particularly intense. Andreas Lechner commented: "In times of increasing right-wing ideologies and growing anti-Semitism, the project wants to create spaces in which art not only entertains, but also awakens."
Events such as the film screenings The Investigation of RP Kahl and Josef Bierbichler's film Two Men in Suits met with a great response and marked the start of a movement, memory as the present and resistance understands.
From 2026, CULTURE AGAINST FORGETTING will appear together with Progress through Art e.V. and with the support of the Remembrance, Responsibility and Future Foundation (EVZ) and in Baden Württemberg with the Berthold Leibinger Foundation, Stiftung Wüstenrot, Stolpersteine and HotelSilber in Stuttgart.
The project is also becoming more international: cooperation with the Ukrainian Institute illuminate the Jewish history of Ukraine; with locomotive material! Theater Stuttgart involves young people in participatory theater formats. Further partnerships are being planned.
CULTURE AGAINST FORGETTING combines artistic excellence with social responsibility. It does not seek a closed narrative, but rather opens up spaces for reflection, contradiction and exchange. Memory is not the past alone - it is the present, resistance and cultural practice.
