About event
Guest of the evening: Gerd Harry “Judy” Lybke, Galerie EIGEN + ART
After the inspiring evenings with Katharina Thalbach and Bettina Rust, we are very much looking forward to the next edition of our “KUNST UM 7 - DER KUNSTSALON”.
This time we welcome Gerd Harry “Judy” Lybke, founder and managing director of the renowned EIGEN + gallery ART based in Leipzig and Berlin. Since the 1980s, he has accompanied artists with passion, courage and curiosity - and made his Leipzig gallery into an internationally important address for contemporary art. He represents big names like Neo Rauch, Tim Eitel, Louisa Clement, David Schnell and Ryan Mosley.
But what does a gallery owner actually do all day? How does he find new talent – and what criteria does he use to decide who to represent? What role do art fairs play and which artists have particularly influenced him on his path?
In conversation with Annette Schneider, Judy Lybke gives insights into the art market - with all its opportunities, challenges and surprises - and at the same time tells about his personal experiences, encounters and stories behind the works. It becomes clear: A gallery owner is much more than a dealer - he is a translator between art and the public.
Framed by the music of Josephine, accompanied by selected wines and nibbles, guests can expect an evening full of insights, anecdotes and lively encounters.
Our guest: Gerd Harry “Judy” Lybke (née 1961 in Leipzig) is the founder and managing director of the gallery EIGEN + ART, which he opened in Leipzig in 1983. With a pioneering spirit, he led the gallery through the upheavals of the post-reunification period and established it as an internationally important platform for contemporary art. Today, EIGEN + ART, with locations in Leipzig and Berlin, is a fixture on the global art market. Lybke is considered a passionate networker and discoverer of numerous artistic personalities who have found recognition worldwide.
Artists in the gallery:
Karl-Heinz Adler, Maja Behrmann, Akos Birkas, Birgit Brenner, Louisa Clement, Marc Desgrandchamps, Martin Eder, Tim Eitel, Martin Groß, Stefan Guggisberg, Stella Hamberg, Stef Heidhues, Jörg Herold, Christine Hill, Igor Hosnedl, Uwe Kowski, Melora Kuhn, Maix Mayer, Ryan Mosley, Lada Nakonechna, Carsten Nicolai, Olaf Nicolai, Li Qing, Neo Rauch, Madeleine Roger-Lacan, Ricarda Roggan, Nicola Samorì, Yehudit Sasportas, Titus Schade, Kai Schiemenz, David Schnell, Kristina Schuldt, Brett Charles Seiler, Annelies Štrba, Ulrike Theusner, Mirjam Völker and Raul Walch
Music: Josephine – also known as Child of the Ocean – is an Afro-German artist whose work oscillates between music, dance and poetic storytelling. Their performances are raw, full of soul and of almost cinematic intensity - fed by their deep roots in the world of performance art.
Location: Hotel ART NOUVEAU - a beautiful old building in the west of Berlin with a historic elevator, 21 individually designed rooms and three stylish event rooms connected by elegant double doors. Owner Ingo Bethke took over the house in 2016 and, with great passion for art and a sense of detail, let it shine in new splendor.
In this intimate, tasteful atmosphere, we welcome guests to special encounters with art - and the people behind it.
