About event
Curator Marta Smolińska invites you on an extraordinary journey into the world of mushrooms at our exhibition “Interwoven Life with Mushrooms”.
The works shown by Joanna Hoffmann and Theresa Schubert open up fascinating perspectives on the life of these often hidden organisms. Both artists move in the field of tension between art, science and technology and make it possible to experience how mushrooms, as independent actors, help shape our world.
Theresa Schubert researches mushrooms as sentient beings that react to their environment. In Sound for Fungi. Homage to Indeterminacy, mycelia respond to sound frequencies and illustrate new forms of communication between human and non-human actors. In Growing Hierarchies – tattooing mushrooms, she uses the natural growth processes of mushrooms to create patterns that raise questions about authorship and creativity.
Joanna Hoffmann, in turn, leads the audience into immersive, virtual worlds. In her work RhiZone: [M-Other] she makes the rhizosphere – the complex network of roots, bacteria and fungi – tangible. Her art shows how closely life, growth and transformation are intertwined in these invisible spheres.
Mushrooms are omnipresent and yet largely invisible. They form networks underground, in the water and in the air, influence the climate, break down pollutants and enable symbioses that support entire ecosystems. During the tour, Marta Smolińska will provide insights into these hidden life forms and show how artists and researchers alike are inspired by the intelligent, interconnected logic of mycelium.
