INTERVIEWING WITH CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
A conversation is like a dance – it has its own rules and both dancers must participate in it. Even with small or teenage dancers we can have a great dance if we tune in to their note.
Course for everyone who works with children and teenagers - psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers and educators.
We will present the structure of conducting an interview with children and adolescents and its specifics. We will guide you through the phases of the conversation, from establishing the first contact and getting the child to cooperate, building a safe space, orientation in the child's situation, direction and targeting of the conversation, to motivating and supporting the child to make the necessary change. We will present an effective way of questioning in accordance with the supporting means of communication. We will focus on the Socratic questioning strategy and work with projective questions. We will offer proven techniques that can be used to work with children of different ages. take work with children and adolescents into account. Methods of questioning and obtaining information in conversation with children of different ages. Specifics of conducting an interview with children and adolescents, possibilities and limits of the interview.
BASES OF THE ADLER APPROACH FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS. Basic goals of the interview in the Adlerian approach. Interpretive framework of questioning: What self-image does the child form? What is the image of others? What is typical role behavior? What is the picture of the world (life)? What patterns of behavior does the child learn? What strategies (methods) does he use?
ENTRY CRITERIA. What we consider before we start enquiring. Setting, interview arrangement. The context of the interview (diagnostic, therapeutic, counseling, ...). Age and mental capacity of the child.
INITIATION OF INTERVIEW. Establishing contact and obtaining a child client for cooperation. Methods of encouraging cooperation. Questions to open the conversation.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREATING A RELATIONSHIP AND BUILDING TRUST. Support communication settings. Support for cooperation and motivation. The 5 Step Method to Confidence. Props and knowledge as an icebreaker. Techniques for reducing anxiety and fear.
WAYS OF OBTAINING INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHILD'S FAMILY SITUATION. Questions to understand the child's family situation: family roles, family atmosphere, family values, family constellation, specific influences (ethnicity, social and economic status, etc.), environmental constraints and opportunities. THE CHILD AND ITS ANALYSIS.
YOU WILL LEARN:
Work with child and adolescent clients in a partnership and respectful setting.
Build a relationship and support cooperation with a child and adolescent client.
Structure the interview to enable understanding of the child and adolescent situation, reveal possibilities for solving problems and support the necessary change.

Use and choose questions within the framework of the offered methodology, which enable understanding of the life situation of the child and adolescent.
Perceive the context of the life experience of the child and adolescent client in a broader perspective.
When working with children and adolescents, take into account the laws of cognitive, emotional and social development.
Use and process the obtained data in order to better understand the client's life dynamics in the spirit of Adlerian procedures.
Reflect on the course of the interview and use own resources to work effectively with the client.
