About event
The dramatic way from Baroque piety to totalitarian ideology. For this occasion, the Brno City Museum prepared the opening of a new anti -war exhibition "Chapel of the Cross" in the former Baroque chapel. In addition to describing the history of this sacral space, the museum presentation will be an artistically conceived sound and light installation. The authors will try to use the Genius loci of the former sanctified and abused place and evoke the emotions of ruin and the hope that has intertwined over the centuries. Original Gothic Chapel of St. John the Baptist had existed since 1277, but it disappeared in the Swedish siege of Brno. The new Baroque chapel was founded in 1693 thanks to the commander of J. W. von Zinzendorf. She was a place of prayers of soldiers, legendary convicts and political prisoners. After 1945 the chapel was not rebuilt, but became a memorial to the anti -Nazi resistance. Today, the chapel is a unique evidence of the desecration of the sacral space of totalitarian ideology. The newly reinstalled exhibition of the Cross Chapel will remind its turbulent history and the contrast between the manifestations of faith and militaristic agitation.
