About event
Grand opera - very intimate!
It is cold in the Parisian winter of the 1830s when the penniless artist clique around Rodolfo, Schaunard, Marcello and Colline meet their neighbor Mimi. Full of desire, they throw themselves into love, art and the art of living and challenge fate with seemingly never-ending enthusiasm - until death and finitude cast their first shadows on their young lives.
Mathieu van Bellen and Mathias Halvorsen perform Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème in a specially arranged version for violin and piano. A large opera for soloists, choir and orchestra is transformed into a work for two soloists. The narrative is brought to life through projected texts, including subtitles, scene descriptions and sections from Henri Murger's novel Scènes de la vie de Bohème. On the one hand, Mathieu van Bellen and Mathias Halvorsen focus entirely on the melodic and harmonic richness of Puccini's music - and on the other hand, they open up space for their own imagination. Musical theater of the fine senses!
"Through a musicality that sometimes takes your breath away, the pair's new adaptation achieves an astonishing (and deeply moving) fullness and richness. You never get the feeling that it lacks narrative weight or emotional engagement. In fact [...] the violin and piano "sing" so lyrically that you see Rodolfo, Musetta and Mimi right in front of you." (The Sunday Times)
