About event
The plague - Meeting with the author and journalist Tonia Mastrobuoni
Moderation: Rosanna Pugliese correspondent Ansa
In Germany there is a plague that cannot be seen, but is growing. It advances silently in the countryside, takes root in forgotten villages, insinuates itself into schools, civil bodies, cultural and religious associations. He doesn't bring flags, but ideas. Old ideas, which seemed buried by history: racism, the cult of purity, anti-Semitism, biological hierarchy between human beings. Behind the reassuring face of organic agriculture or alternative pedagogy, a disturbing universe takes shape. It is that of the völkisch communities, of the "ecological" neo-Nazis, of those nostalgic for the Reich, who educate their children in isolated farms, train them in paramilitary camps, and dream of a new ethnic order. In this book-investigation, Tonia Mastrobuoni reconstructs a widespread network of extremist movements that have stopped staying on the margins: today they work methodically to infiltrate institutions, build local consensus, rewrite memory and conquer power "from below". The Alternative für Deutschland party is today the main political vector of this radicalization. Born as a Eurosceptic and populist force, it has progressively absorbed racist and nationalist demands and the thought of the New Right, to the point of becoming a crossroads between the parliamentary dimension and the vast galaxy of neo-fascist extremism. Today it is a party classified by the German secret services as an anti-democratic movement and at risk of subversion. Mastrobuoni tells of a Germany that resists, of course, but is under attack: judges, teachers, evangelical pastors, mayors are threatened, isolated, attacked. An entire democratic fabric risks being worn out from within, without the alarm being fully perceived. A disturbing journey into the heart of a democracy that discovers itself vulnerable. A lucid, documented, urgent warning: if it is happening in Germany, it can happen anywhere. Something is being prepared in Germany. Not marches, but infiltrations. Not buzzwords, but manuals. Not nostalgia, but strategies. An investigation into the hidden face of the German far right: from neo-Nazi farms to the radicalization of the AfD.
Tonia Mastrobuoni (Brussels 1971) is correspondent for "la Repubblica" from Germany and Eastern Europe. She was a correspondent for "La Stampa" and a parliamentary reporter for various newspapers. He deals with international economics and finance, European diplomacy and geopolitics. He has won numerous journalistic awards, including the Premiolino in 2018 for his "acute and careful investigative work on Germany, a key European country between crisis and growth". She is the author of The Unexpected. Angela Merkel, a political biography (2021) and Erosion. How sovereignisms are wiping out democracy in Europe (2023).
