About event

This event will be an attempt to unpack and unravel Lacan's essay *Remarks on Daniel Lagache's Presentation: "Psychoanalysis and Personality structure"* (1960)*.*

In *On Narcissism* (1914), Freud introduced his 'second topology' of his exploration of the unconscious-conscious inner workings. Here we find the beginnings of the id, ego, superego structure elaborated in his later work *The Ego and the Id* (1923). In this earlier work, however, Freud uses the terms 'ideal ego' and 'ego-ideal' rather than superego in a rather vague (to some) manner. Lagache takes these two terms and constructs his understanding of the ego as a synthesis with the ideal ego (narcissistic-libido) and ego-ideal (object-libido). Lacan takes Lagache as a starting point and shows his own understanding of the ego as a construction of the symbolic-imaginary-real.

This event is the first movement of a trio of events centered around a Lacanian interpretation of works of literature. We will follow up with Austen's *Emma* and end with Blanchot's *Thomas the Obscure.*

Our online meeting will take place in Discord, so please make sure to join our Discord group beforehand. Here is the invitation to our group: [https://discord.gg/DEcXZDgXZj](https://discord.gg/DEcXZDgXZj) There are two 'channels' in this group. We will meet in the "Lacan & Literature" meeting room towards the bottom. If you have any doubts or you are not familiar with this platform, please send me a message and I’ll help you.

"For these ideas are not the foundation of science, upon which everything rests: that foundation is observation alone." - Freud *On Narcissism*

"If I explained what I am trying to tell you in a clear and concise way that you could easily understand, then I will have failed in what I set out to do." - Lacan
