Main idea

Growing desires for more self-determination and sovereignty in most African countries, the resurgence of pan-African movements and global power shifts in the new world order towards multipolarity raise the question: Is Africa facing an epochal break? However, whether African countries will be able to use the new constellation of balance of power to pursue development paths towards greater political and economic capacity also depends on the form and performance of their financial systems in a world in transition.

That is why the State Network of African Associations (LAV) e.V. cordially invites you to its 2025 specialist day to discuss “Africa's sovereignty in a world in 2025” as part of the LAV project Upheaval” to discuss the following questions with you:

What are African financial systems like? What are their historical foundations and how do they work today? What connections do they have to colonial and imperial economic logics? How are they affected by current changes in the international financial system? How could they be decolonized institutionally and in their functional logic in order to give African countries greater financial and economic policy-making power to increase their economic performance and ensure the sustainable development of their societies? Finally: What political challenges, responsibilities and future prospects arise from this in Africa and for German Africa policy?

Panel discussion questions: What might new efforts for economic and financial sovereignty look like from an African perspective? What paths can Africa take to achieve lasting prosperity for its people through its own financial mechanisms? How can the decolonization of African (and international) financial systems be successful and contribute to the formation of sustainable development strategies that are aligned with the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda? What obstacles and challenges can we expect? What role, for example, do the private sector/business associations, think tanks, interbank agreements play in such a process? What new dangers threaten with the upheavals in Africa, such as new dependencies on China, India and Russia, for example? How can Europe build partnerships on an equal footing with Africa in order to achieve the sustainable development goals together? What does this mean for German Africa policy? How can the African diaspora support (financial) economic decolonization processes?

We look forward to discussing these questions with you.

Sources from Africa can be used to maintain a durable prosperity for the population size with its own financing mechanisms? Are there obstacles and difficulties beforehand? What role is there, for example, in the privé sector/professional associations, reflection groups, interbank accords in the process? Quels new new menaces with les bouleversements en Africa, par example of new dépendances vis-à-vis de la Chine, de l'Inde et de la Russie?
