Juan Poblete:
Reading, attention and digital culture: Towards a political economy and an ecology of reading today

Series of conferences “Knowledge – cultures – medialities”

Young people read and write today more than any previous generation. What they read and write, however, is generated informally and circulates in digital exchanges of texts and audiovisual material across platforms. Unlike the state public education of yesteryear, which formed the subject-citizen, current digital production responds to the logic of the market and the interests of private corporate actors.

In this conference, Juan Poblete (University of California-Santa Cruz, USA) asks about the possibilities of deep reading in the midst of digital transformation. What and who controls the production of value (objectives, profit, sustainability) in the context of technogenesis, understood as the co-evolution of human beings and technologies? What role do formal writing and reading and public education play in the face of technogenesis and data colonialism? What is at stake is the difference between the circulation of information and the production of knowledge, control and freedom.
