About event
Lecture “Dark Christmas. How Europe invented Christmas in literature"
Today it seems to us that Christmas has always been exactly like this: a decorated tree, songs, lights, anticipation of gifts and miracles, a festive table, the whole family gathered. But this image is only a century and a half old - and in many ways it was invented by Charles Dickens.
In the lecture we will understand how Europe, step by step, “constructed” Christmas: from Victorian stories about ghosts and charity to northern myths, Yule creatures and the special art of surviving the long winter.
We will talk about:
—Dickens as the “author of Christmas” and the Victorian tradition Christmas ghost stories;
—Scandinavian myths and winter rituals, embodied in the texts of Selma Lagerlöf and Tove Jansson;
—how these stories are rooted in European traditions and continue to live in modern literature right up to Donna Tartt and other authors.
 Where: Vorona Galerie
 When: 16 December, 18:30
 Cost: 25 € (wine and snacks included)
 Seats are limited. Write private messages or telegram @nina_kalaus
