Cherbourg, November 1957. Geneviève Emery, whose mother runs a roofing company, loves Guy Foucher, a young mechanic. Geneviève's mother does not take kindly to this romance and would prefer to see her daughter marry Roland Cassard, a rich diamond merchant. Guy is drafted into the army for the Algerian war.
